Chapter Fifteen

I woke up early and got ready before my parents had a chance to find me in the kitchen. I chose a short pair of shorts and a camisole for the day. I knew it would get hot at the festival and didn’t think buckets of sweat pouring from me would be a good look around Decker.

I came home late last night, but it wouldn’t have been for any reason that my mom would find interesting. Decker drove me home and slid a kiss along my cheek, but that was it. Instead of walking into my home, I walked along the road to this little park overlooking the Sound. The park was tiny with just a few benches, but it served the purpose. I sat there and thought about everything.

Decker and I had that one passionate kiss since we’d met, and I held onto it with everything I had, but we hadn’t had one since. I wasn’t sure what to make of it or anything else.

I knew we both liked each other. The chemistry was off the charts—just having his hand graze over mine sent me into a tailspin—and I couldn’t wait for more.

But I wasn’t sure the more would ever happen. We didn’t have a ton of time between his job and mine to meet in the middle somewhere and see one another. And maybe we weren’t meant to go the extra distance. Maybe Decker’s friendship was all I needed in my life right now.

I let out a disgruntled sigh and shook my head. I didn’t really like that option.

As I grabbed my bag and snuck out of the house quietly, I chuckled to myself, thinking back to high school. This was basically how I’d spent my evenings and weekends, sneaking in and out of the house, hoping I wouldn’t wake up my parents.

Decker was meeting me in front of my sister’s chocolate store, and then we’d walk to the festival. I had enough time to go grab a latte and pick up something to eat, which was precisely what I did.

By the time I rolled up to the center of town where my sister’s chocolate shop was located, the streets were barricaded off and crowds of people wandered the streets and sidewalks. I spotted Decker immediately and waved as I made my way over to him with a cup of coffee in hand.

He looked just as good as always, which put my libido into overdrive. Why couldn’t I just look at him and move on? Instead, every cell in my body turned into a fiery mess of emotion.

I handed Decker the cup of coffee and smiled. “You’re looking pretty good this morning, all fresh and perky.”

He ran his fingers through his hair and laughed. “I try.”

“Maybe it’s all the seawater you get.”

“Could be.” He took a sip, glancing down at me. “Should we hit it?”

I nodded. “Absolutely. Time is limited.”

“I’ve been thinking a lot about that.” He linked his fingers with mine.

“About the festival? We could stay all day here if you want.
